The Trinity Western Spartans women’s team goes into the holiday break with a 3-5 record after dropping two games to the top team in the country.

The visiting Saskatchewan Huskies won 70-48 and 71-53 last week (Nov. 26 and 27). The first contest was at the Langley Events Centre while the latter was at the David E. Enarson Gymnasium.

The Huskies scored the first 13 points in Friday’s win and led 26-10 after one quarter and never looked back.

“Saskatchewan came out with a lot of fire and we got a taste of what a great team does on a second night. But after the first four minutes, we settled into the game and battled through on both sides of the ball,” said TWU head coach Cheryl Jean-Paul.

“These games have been a learning exercise in the things it takes to win tough games and our finishing and shooting really hurt our ability to keep it close when we were able to make pushes. But we’ve had a very promising first semester, we’ve established a competitive mindset, and now have some time to get back to training and work on continuing to improve as a program.”

Jessie Brown led the team with 19 points while Tessa Ratzlaff had 17 in the second game. The first game saw Brown and Ratzlaff each score 14 while Natalie Carkner chipped in with a dozen points and seven rebounds.
