Two poor innings prove costly for Jr. Blaze

Two big innings out of 14 did in the Langley Jr. Blaze.

The U16 baseball team lost back-to-back games — the first time that has happened all season — as they came out on the wrong ends of 9-8 and 8-2 decisions against the Victoria Jr. Mariners.

Both games were played in the provincial capital on Saturday.

Despite the defeats, Langley remains one of the elite teams in the B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League, with a 23-4 mark.

In the doubleheader opener, Langley looked like they were on their way to their seventh straight victory, leading 8-1 in the top of the sixth inning.

But the Mariners pulled off the stunning rally, scoring eight runs, all of them unearned as the Blaze committed multiple errors in the inning.

Nick Rutckyj had three RBIs in the losing cause.

The second game saw Victoria score six runs in the second inning and cruise to the 8-2 victory as the Blaze were held to three hits.

Tyler O'Neill, who picked up the loss in game one,  belted a home run for Langley in the second game.

Aaron Mantle was tagged for the loss.

The Blaze will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday (June 8) when they visit the South Surrey Athletic Park to face the White Rock Jr. Tritons.
