Trinity Western’s Sean Peter (#15) makes a move to the basket while Fraser Valley’s Kyle Grewal defends during Canada West men’s basketball action at the Langley Events Centre. The Cascades won 89-70 as both teams now ready for the playoffs later this month.

A poor third quarter cost the Trinity Western Spartans as the fell 89-70 to the Fraser Valley Cascades.

The two men's basketball teams were playing their  Canada West regular season finales at the Langley Events Centre on Thursday night.

And the Cascades turned a one-point lead into an insurmountable 20-point advantage thanks to a 32-13 third quarter.

"It wasn't the way we wanted to end," said Spartans coach Scott Allen, whose team finished the regular season at 10-8.

"I think three quarters were good but the one quarter got away from us.

"In the third quarter, we didn't take shots and we gave up shot. It's pretty simple."

"In the first half, we showed what we can do but we just need to learn to play consistently," he added.

"It might be a little bit late to be saying that, but if we have the ability to do it, we have to find a way."

Fraser Valley, ranked fifth in the country, finished the season at 13-5.

Trinity Western will play either Saskatchewan or Alberta — whoever finishes higher — in a best-of-three Canada West playoff series on the road Feb. 23-26.

Calvin Westbrook led the way for Trinity Western with 15 points while Sean Peter was the only other Spartan to reach double figures. Niko Monachini added nine points and six rebounds.

During the regular season, Trinity Western lost to both their potential playoff opponents: 87-77 to Alberta and 98-73 to Saskatchewan.
