A two-day trip to Oregon resulted in a scoreless draw and a narrow one-goal loss for the Trinity Western Spartans against a pair of NCAA soccer foes.

The Spartans women's soccer team tied the Oregon State Beavers 0-0 on April 14 before losing 2-1 to the Oregon Ducks the next afternoon.

Against the Beavers, goalkeeper Kristen Funk stopped a penalty shot attempt, as well as several other quality saves.

"I'm really pleased with how our kids battled," said coach Graham Roxburgh.

"We played a very good team and we showed that we can compete with some very good teams when we show up.

"We bent a few times, but never broke and were rewarded with the draw."

Trinity Western also played a pair of spring games the week before their Oregon trek.

On April 9, the Spartans dropped a 1-0 decision to the Western Washington Vikings in Pullman, Wash.

And on April 3, at Rogers Park on the TWU campus, the Spartans posted their fifth straight shutout of the spring season with a 1-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps U18 elite team.

Jessica King scored in the 42nd minute, taking a brilliant pass through the middle from Tessa Meyer, beating the lone defender in her way and whipping a low shot past the keeper, Kayla Klim.

"It was a really competitive game and we knew that would be the case because the Whitecaps have so much talent and quality and they're so well coached," Roxburgh said.

"I  was really pleased because after the first 15 minutes, in which both teams were kind of helter-skelter, we settled down and we generated some chances."
