Trinity Western's Dan Jansen Van Doorn (#6) and Rudy Verhoeff team up on a block during Saturday's victory over Alberta.

For the first time in program history, the Trinity Western Spartans completed a two-game sweep of the Alberta Golden Bears.

The top-ranked Spartans defeated the third-ranked Golden Bears 3-1 (21-25,25-23,25-17,25-22) and 3-0 (25-20,25-23,25-19) at the David E. Enarson Gymnasium.

The Spartans improved to 12-0.

"Getting a two-night sweep is difficult against anybody but when it's your rival and when it's a team as talented as they are and a coach as great as Terry (Danyluk) is, it's extra special," said coach Ben Josephson.

'"I thought our guys played hard tonight and they earned every bit of what they got."

Dan Jansen Van Doorn led the way with 10 kills, five blocks and three aces while Rudy Verhoeff had 11 kills, seven digs and three blocks. Marc Howatson had nine kills, seven digs and three blocks.

Verhoeff had 20 kills, 11 digs and four blocks on the first night, while Steven Marshall finished with a game-high 18 digs and Jansen Van Doorn had a game-high seven blocks and four of the team's nine aces.

The Spartans return to the Langley Events Centre when they host the Winnipeg Wesmen for a pair of matches.
