TWU volleyball: Spartans recover to finish fifth

Langley's Trinity Western University enters sixth, leaves nationals ranked fifth

Relegated to the consolation side of the draw after a loss in the quarter-finals, the Trinity Western Spartans responded with a pair of victories to close out the CIS women's volleyball national championships.

Competing at the tournament at Hamilton's McMaster University, the Spartans dropped their opening day match to the Montreal Carabins, ending Trinity Western's championship aspirations.

The Spartans won their final two matches to place fifth. They had entered the tournament seeded sixth.

"After the first day, this was all that was available for us and that's what we were gunning for," said coach Ryan Hofer.

The Spartans won 3-1 (25-22,23-25,25-21,25-20) over No. 4 Saint Mary's.

Trinity Western was led by Alicia Perrin, who had a match-high 16 kills, 12 blocks and 11 digs. Prior to the tournament, Perrin was named a second team all-Canadian.

Kelci French had 11 kills, nine digs and three blocks while Amy Leschied had 11 kills, 12 digs and four blocks.

It was the final game in a Spartans uniform for graduating seniors Chelsea Hudson and Jodi Neufeld. Hudson finished with 37 assists, nine digs and two aces while Neufeld had a team-high 17 digs.

In the Spartans first game, they lost 3-1 (25-22,11-25, 25-21,25-23) to Montreal, despite being the better team statistically. Trinity Western was done in by  too many errors.

They beat Queen's 3-0 (25-22,25-13,25-23) in their next match.
