Hundreds of swimmers competed in the Lower Mainland Regional “East” Championships hosted by the Langley and Abbotsford Olympians Swim Club over the Feb. 8-9 weekend at the Walnut Grove pool.

This year, coach Zachary Bryan Haw explained, coaches of the region changed the meet format changed from a timed final to heats and finals.

“This format brought a renewed energy and commitment to fast swimming,” Haw said.

“Swimmers stood up to challenges and competition and advanced to finals. In finals, the swimmers took another step and improved a lot of their times. This was great to see from a coach perspective and I am excited to see how motivating and encouraging this event can be for swimmers.”

LOSC swimmers performed well, winning medals in multiple events.

LOSC 12 and Under Girls won gold in the 200 Medley Relay (Emily Kwon, Jenna Friesen, Macey Larson, Sammi Burwell) and so did 15 and Over Boys (Jugga Sandhu, Brayden Herbert, Taha Naghibzadeh, Joshua Williams).

“It was great to see swimmers who don’t typically make finals stand up and race,” Haw commented.

A club record in the 1500 FR 12 and under girls was established by Sammi Burwell with a time of 19:19.00.

Finn Parr qualified for the BC provincial championships, and and Robyn Hillier and Jenna Friesen qualified for BC age Group championships.
