Midori Turner has been running the Walnut Grove Terry Fox run for the last three years.
It’s not a coincidence that the small business owner took over organizing the run the year after her father Howard’s brush with cancer.
“I think it’s inspiring,” Turner said of the annual run.
Howard had lung and throat cancer and was treated in 2011.
“He’s clear now, so we’re good to go,” said Turner.
A member of Langley’s Rotary Sunrise club, which has provided organizers for the event in the past, she noted that this year’s will be the 35th since Fox ran in his Marathon of Hope.
Typically more than 100 people turn up for the annual run, and so far Turner has had sunny weather for each of the three years she’s been organizing the event.
She’s also getting help from Langley Township staff at the Walnut Grove Community Centre, where the run begins.
The Walnut Grove event is one of three that will take place this weekend.
In Aldergrove Rebecca Stewart is organizing for the second year, with the help of various members of her family.
She grew up in Aldergrove, and Stewart knew some of Terry Fox’s nieces and nephews growing up. That, along with her family’s experiences with cancer, have motivated her to organize the annual event.
The Aldergrove event is ready for either rain or shine.
“We definitely have some tents,” said Stewart.
They will also have a kids zone with a bouncy castle, and a silent auction. They’re hoping to have a barbecue with hot dogs as well.
The Walnut Grove run starts at 9 a.m. on Sept. 20, with registration at 8:30 a.m. and a warm up before the actual event.
There is a single five-kilometre route that is suitable for walkers, runners, and cyclists.
The Aldergrove Terry Fox Run has registration begin at 9 a.m. Sept. 20 at the Aldergrove Kinsmen Centre next to the high school. The run starts at 10 a.m. and runs to 1 p.m., and includes three, five, and 10 km routes.
