My ties to the Langley Advance began when I was only seven years old. Photographs of my twin sister, Corina, and I were frequently published in the Advance. Not only were we impossible to tell apart but we were dressed identically which seemed to pique the interest of readers.
When out in the community, it wasn’t unusual to have a photographer from the Advance ask to take our photo. We always said yes and enjoyed feeling like celebrities.
Ever eager to see if our photo would be published, it felt like an eternity awaited the paper’s delivery to our home. How thrilling it was to see our matching faces looking back at us and hearing comments from our friends and neighbours who shared in our mini-fame.
It was through this experience that I grew to realize the power of the Advance to not only shine a light on a community but to bring people together.
Our family moved to Langley from Ladner in 1976 and the Advance helped us make the most of our chosen community.
Aside from my four years away at university, I have been fortunate enough to make Langley my home. Today my husband and our three children stay connected and engaged with the help of the Langley Advance. It continues to be an important delivery to our doorstep.
Oh, how I enjoy the memory of those photos today. Like me, the Advance has undergone significant change over the decades, but at its core the same values and relevance exist.
