Dozens of motorcyclists revved their engines and hit the road Sunday for the 25th annual Ride for the Kids fundraiser.

The Greater Vancouver Motorcycle Club gathered at its Port Kells clubhouse for the ride, originally started in honour of the late Gord Heppler.

Gord’s wife Jackie Heppler is still helping to organize the event. For most of the ride’s history, the funds raised went to the Vancouver Children’s Hospital, but they now dnate to the Firefighters Burn Fund.

Jackie Heppler said that in the last 24 years, the ride has raised $188,000 for children’s health programs.

“We hoped to get 70 to 80 [riders],” said club president Phil Blackburn.

Wes Jamison, who helped organize the route, said riders were heading out at 11 a.m. through Surrey, then Delta down River Road, back through South Surrey, Langley, and into Abbotsford before finishing the ride back at the clubhouse.

The riders were set to make stops at local firehalls.

Money paid for breakfast, registration, and lunch were all to go to the Burn Fund.
