Erin Bartley and the rest of the Nicomekl Elementary’s parent advisory committee hope bottle collecting and paper shredding can raise at least $300 towards a garden shed for the school’s kids.

The Langley City elementary is hosting a joint shred-a-thon and bottle drive on Saturday, June 3.

“We are an inner city school and really rely on the amazing support of the whole community to help raise funds to support various activities within the school - such as our garden plots, reading club, intramural prizes, Christmas fun day, sports day, community outreach, presentations, and so much more,” said Bartley, who serves as PAC treasurer.

As it’s a first-time event, the committee has nothing to compare it to in the way of specific goals, but they’re hoping to earmark the money for the garden – which they access through LEPS for various curriculum activities.

“We can see the funds raised going towards a garden shed to help store supplies, so our volunteers have easy access during the summer, to help keep up the garden,” Bartley explained.

The fundraiser is being held at the school, at the corner of 200th Street and 53rd Avenue, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In addition to the adults volunteering Saturday, several of the kids are also expected to be helping, doing thing such as labelling the bags of bottles, loading bottles in the truck to go to the depot, and drumming up business on the road side.

“This is a great event for people doing some spring cleaning of their garages, home offices and businesses. Everyone in the community is welcome to drop by with their bagged refundable bottles and documents/papers to be shredded for a minimum donation,” Bartley concluded.
