Ever wondered what a major earthquake feels like?
There was a whole lot of shaking going in the northwest parking of the Willowbrook Shopping Centre earlier this month, as the Quake Cottage, an earthquake simulator based out of California, made a stopover.
Visitors had a chance to experience a level seven magnitude earthquake on May 7 as part of the Shake Zone event presented by both the Township and the City, and the Langley Emergency Program.
Langley Township Mayor Jack Froese and Langley City Mayor Ted Schaffer held on tight to experience the “earthquake.”
Schaffer said the Quake Cottage gave him a “total perspective” on what could happen in the community in the event of a major quake.
“It’s great to be prepared and I give full marks to the Langley Emergency Program for putting this together for us,” Schaffer said. “The Lower Mainland is susceptible to earthquakes, so it’s better to be prepared than not.”
The free event featured emergency preparedness information stations that showed how an earthquake will affect the day-to-day life and the science behind earthquakes.
A community scrawl wall was set up so people can write or draw how they feel about being better prepared for a real earthquake.
