The days are getting longer, the trees are blossoming and the Township of Langley is ready for a good spring cleaning.
Families, individuals, businesses, and community groups are once again invited to help keep the Township beautiful by taking part in the fifth annual Clean Up Langley Day.
Held in celebration of Earth Day, the event will run Saturday, April 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Participants can choose to work in a specific neighbourhood or park, and all necessary supplies — including gloves, safety vests, garbage pickers, and garbage bags — will be provided by the Township.
Clean-ups can take anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours, and are a great opportunity to make a difference in the community, enhance the environment, and spend time with neighbours and friends.
Last year, 200 volunteers in 15 groups collected 2,000 kgs of waste from local streets, trails, and waterways — the highest participation and tonnage of waste collected so far.
“We are always inspired by the residents who volunteer their free time to help keep our Township beautiful and healthy,” said solid waste co-ordinator Tanya Drouillard.
“Combating litter and illegal dumping is a community effort and year after year hundreds of residents have stepped up to the task with enthusiasm.”
The Township recognizes the need to address litter and illegal dumping with proactive measures and will be implementing a new litter and illegal waste management strategy this year.
The strategy is based on successful programs from around the world and emphasizes education, infrastructure, and enforcement.
“Bringing awareness to the issue of litter and illegal dumping is crucial to the success of the strategy,” Drouillard said.
“Clean Up Langley Day is a great opportunity to beautify our community, recognize our volunteers, and remind offenders that we will not tolerate litter or illegal dumping in our Township.”
