Forget dainty tea parties, Amber Academy’s Alice in Wonderland promises an enchanting adventure filled with fantastical characters and contemporary music.

The 60-minute musical, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s beloved story, takes centre stage at the Sooke Community Hall on April 26 and 27.

Under the artistic direction of Paul Holmes and choreography by Emily Eymundson, audiences will be transported to a whimsical world where logic bends and the absurd becomes reality.

Set in Victorian England, the story follows young Alice who tumbles down a rabbit hole into a strange underground world.

Faced with impossible situations, Alice must navigate her way back home. Along the journey, she encounters iconic characters – the perpetually late White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat with its mischievous grin, a curious Caterpillar, the wacky Mad Hatter, and the temperamental Queen of Hearts.

Three storytellers add a layer of comedy to this unique stage adaptation.

“This is a classic tale infused with contemporary music, creating a colourful and visually engaging experience for the audience,” said Holmes.

“Working with these enthusiastic young actors has been incredibly rewarding. It’s a joy to witness their blossoming talent and confidence as they prepare this fun and entertaining show for the community.”

The musical includes familiar favourites like The Unbirthday Song and Painting the Roses Red, alongside toe-tapping contemporary tunes that will have audiences singing along.

“I love working with everyone. My character, Alice, is a curious and enthusiastic young girl with a touch of craziness,” said Marley Leahy, who portrays Alice.

Cecilia Gutierrez-Miller, a seasoned 10-year-old student at Amber Academy, takes on the role of the Queen of Hearts. “I think the Academy is a fantastic acting program,” she said. “The Queen of Hearts is a complex character – she can be both mad and sweet.”

Rounding out the cast is 14-year-old Finlay Grant, who brings the Mad Hatter to life.

“I’m incredibly excited for this show,” he said. “The cast is amazing, and we’ve had so much fun working together. It’s going to be a great performance.”

Alice in Wonderland is staged April 26 at 7 p.m. and April 27 at 2 and 7 p.m.
