Langley Township Council has put its support behind an upcoming Mayor’s Gala Ball in September.

On Monday afternoon, the mayor and council passed a motion announcing this event, that is being put together by the Township of Langley Firefighters’ Charitable Society (TLFCS).

In conjunction with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF ) Local 4550 Township of Langley Professional Firefighters as well as the TLFCS, the Township will host the first such gala in September 2018.

This inaugural event will raise funds earmarked for the enhancement of Langley Memorial Hospital’s emergency ward.

“The Township of Langley and its citizens have a great history of giving, and have consistently put the Township of Langley on the map amongst the highest contributing communities in B.C. and Canada for the annual Muscular Dystrophy boot drive,” IAFF Local 4550 President Andy Hewitson said.

The notion of a Mayor’s Gala is inspired by similar events hosted by several other Lower Mainland Mayors’ offices, and the potential has been discussed with enthusiasm at the TLFCS Committee table for a couple of years.

TLFCS Director Steve McLay explained that the firefighters’ benevolent society hosts and takes part in many events to benefit the citizens of Langley, adding how excited the group is to be able to benefit from “such an amazing opportunity.”

“We brought the idea to our mayor and council last month, and they eagerly took it on with a unanimous vote at today’s afternoon council session,” McLay said March 5. “It was great to be in (council) chambers and hear the positive things said about our society in discussing the event.”

Hewitson added, “Our firefighters believe in giving back and the recently announced plan to enhance Langley Memorial Hospital’s emergency ward is very fitting as the keystone recipient of the first Mayor’s Gala in Langley.”

The aim of the Township of Langley Firefighters’ Charitable Society is to benefit the citizens they protect as firefighters, through local charitable programs and to assist other charities with similar objectives that operate in the best interest of their community.

The Township of Langley Firefighters’ Charitable Society is a not-for-profit society registered in the Province of British Columbia, in the interest of focusing the fundraising and benevolent activities of the Township of Langley’s firefighters.
