VIDEO: Langley City celebrates Earth Day, early

Weekend event held in Douglas Park

An estimated 300 people turned out for Earth Day in Langley City’s Douglas Park on Saturday, April 20, the weekend before the day itself was celebrated on Monday.

It was slightly more than last year, when the weather was less than ideal, said Nichole Marples, executive director of Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS) and a member of the environmental sustainability committee for the City of Langley who hosted the event.

Marples described it as “a day to reflect on the values that our earth provides to us, and the need to protect and enhance our earth for all the things, all of the livelihood that it provides.”

There were booths selling local produce or providing information about the earth including Mason Bee Company, LEPS, Langley Field Naturalists, Langley Community Farmers Market, Climate Crisis Langley Action Partners, and the Explore Science Club.

It was the third year in a row for the family-friendly event which featured hands-on workshops, garden tours, Earth Day bingo, scavenger hunts, and other kids games, free supplies to help keep neighourhood parks and trails clean with Pitch-In Canada, indigenous plant and seed giveaways, gift cards, gardening prizes, and more.

The occasion was marked by the planting of an Asian pear tree in Douglas Park Community Garden in support of the City’s commitment to environmental sustainability with Mayor Nathan Pachal, Langley MLA Andrew Mercier, City councillor Paul Albrecht, and Lisa Boughen, Douglas Park Community Gardener and member of the City sustainability committee.
