It’s been a golden season on the water for the Abreast with FORT-itude dragonboat crew.
The crew, made up of breast cancer survivors, had a terrific year paddling on the Bedford Channel with the Fort Langley Canoe Club, noted team member Juanita Peglar.
Abreast with FORT-itude won gold in the breast cancer survivor division at all three of the club’s major dragon boat regattas: the False Creek Women’s Regatta, the Rio Tinto Alcan Festival and the Nanaimo Regatta.
After three very full seasons, including training hard for the Canadian nationals in 2013, and racing in Italy at the Club Crew World Championships in 2014 Abreast with FORT-itude heads into 2016 with several of its veteran paddlers retiring.
“We are looking to fill the boat with some newbies,” Peglar said.
For those who want to keep fit, learn a new skill, and Peglar noted, “join a great team of fabulous women after your breast cancer treatment,” Abreast with FORT-itude is hosting an event to introduce women to the sport.
The open house is at the Fort Langley Canoe Club on the shores of the Fraser River Saturday, Oct. 17, starting at 10:30 a.m.
