The weather outside is cooling down, but the beauty of all four seasons can be found indoors at an upcoming art show in Langley.

Local artist Lisa Powers is showcasing a series of paintings in her first annual art show titled The Four Seasons.

“It’s an experimental process that evolved. Our landscape here is gorgeous and we get seasons which is nice. Seeing the leaves fall, the ocean, the mountains. I think it’s really unique to B.C. and Vancouver.”

The series features more than 30 mixed media paintings.

Powers describes her art as ‘whimsical’ and uses a variety of colours and sizes.

“I’ve always enjoyed drawing and painting as a kid,” said Powers.

“I do like the bright colours. I want a painting to look like a painting, not a photograph so I’m not after realism, I’m after more fun, a pop of colour. I would say they are simplified and sleek.”“

Powers explained how the series also depicts her journey as a ‘career-artist,’ and how it connects to the changing seasons.

“How hope blooms and opportunities abound (spring), how I’m rewarded for my efforts and I’m recognized for my talent and skills (summer), the realities of economy and the sacrifices I’ve made to pursue my passion (fall), and recognizing when to lay low and strategies for the coming year (winter).”

She took on art full-time four years ago after she left her office job.

“There are ways to make money as an artist, and that’s what I was trying to prove to myself.”

While working part-time and raising children as a single mother, Powers pursued a fine arts degree when she was 30.

“It was the first time I felt I belonged. Working in an office, I felt I wasn’t doing what I was meant to do. I do feel we need to pursue the gifts that we have been given and in a way, trust that the right doors and opportunities are going to open for us.”

As a full-time artist, Powers also teachers art classes to all ages.

“It took four years to get to this place,” said Powers.

“Four years of witnessing the seasons change while staying true to my vision, protecting my investment, watching it grow.”

The Four Seasons exhibit is open to the public on Nov. 17 and 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at The Loft Studios, 20458 Fraser Hwy.
