Submit projects for Langley's unique recycling art show

The Langley Arts Council building on Fraser Highway is expected to be a busy place Friday and Saturday as people turn in their projects for the Upcycle Design Challenge.

The second annual event is expected to have more participants after last year’s success.

“Last year had 34 entries and I hope to see a sizable increase this year, though we won’t know until April 12 for sure,” said Township solid waste coordinator Krista Daniszewski.

Upcycling means converting waste material into a more valuable or useful product and both the event’s organizers and the public were impressed by the thought, talent, and variety that went into last year’s entries.

The Township and the Langley Arts Council are again collaborating on the project which culminates in a public art show on April 22, which is Earth Day.

The show includes prizes awarded by judges but also an award for the people’s choice winner. Prizes will be awarded based on creativity, originality, the percentage of reused material utilized, practicality, and artistic merit.

First place will win $500, with second place earning $200, and third place receiving $100.

People must turn in their creations April 11 and 12 at the arts council building, 20550 Fraser Hwy. noon to 8 p.m. Friday or 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

They must also bring along a printout of the entry form available at tol.ca/upcycling.

Aspiring eco artists aged 14 and up are invited to participate by creating a new product using a minimum of 75 per cent found or recovered items. The submissions are available for pick-up by the entrants after the art show.
