GivingTuesday events are happening at various sites around Langley today.
GivingTuesday is the global charitable event that opens the giving season.
“It’s a day for charities, businesses and individuals in Langley to join forces and share a commitment to support local causes that are making a difference,” said Terra Scheer, a spokesperson for Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation.
The #LangleyGives charity campaign includes the hospital foundation, Langley Hospice Society, Langley School District Foundation, and Volunteer Langley. For GivingTuesday, they are feeding folks.
Make a donation on site and take a selfie to help promote the GivingTuesday movement. The day kicked off with breakfast by donation at the Langley Events Centre and the Aldergrove Legion but there’s still lunch.
• 11a.m. to 1 p.m. – “Grill and Give” hot dog lunch locations in the Coast Hotel and Convention Centre parking lot, 20393 Fraser Hwy. (Hosted by Langley Care Foundation), as well as Save-On-Foods, 8840 210th St. (hosted by Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation).
“We are also asking the community to help promote GivingTuesday by going online and using the hashtags #GivingTuesdayCa or #LangleyGives and sharing their stories on how they are giving back to their favourite charity,” Scheer said.
Mom was a giver
Ron Dubbin describes his mom, Doris Walkden, as someone who enjoyed helping people.
“Mom was a giver. She enjoyed helping people and that continued in her life after she retired. She would do housekeeping for seniors at home who need help doing dishes and cleaning. People always asked for her and she really loved the relationships she built.”
To honour her, he will match GivingTuesday donations on Nov. 28 (up to $2,000) for the purchase of new beds for those in residential care.
Doris worked at Langley Memorial Hospital in housekeeping for residential care and was passionate about helping others, particularly seniors.

Milestone
This is the fifth year for GivingTuesday in Canada. Last year 6.2 million Canadians participated in GivingTuesday and it’s become a key fundraising event for many non-profits and community groups.
GivingTuesday was launched in Canada in 2013 by GIV3 and CanadaHelps.org. GivingTuesday is a day for the entire charitable sector and encourages all Canadians to join the movement and give and volunteer for charities of their choice. GivingTuesday was originally founded in the US by 92nd Street Y in partnership with the UN Foundation. www.givingtuesday.ca
