Youth Week kicks off May 1 in Langley City

From Tuesday to Sunday, there’s activities for young people ages 12 to 17.

A movie about youth mental health, basketball, a talent showcase, and an obstacle course are some of the activities during Youth Week.

Langley City hosts events from May 1 to 7 intended to appeal to young people to mark the internationally celebrated Youth Week.

“Langley City is excited to take part in the annual celebratory week of events during the week of May 1 to May 7,” said Rebecca Gannon-Snow, the City’s youth recreation leader. “It’s a fun-filled week for youth to make new friends and have some fun.”

Participation for youth is free. And there are more than $1,000 in prizes to be won and the activities are for ages 12 to 17.

• 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament: From 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, teams can compete for cash prizes at the Timms Community Centre. Spectators are welcome and teams must sign up in advance

• Open Mic Night: On Wednesday, May 2, between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., the Langley City Youth group hosts a drop-in evening of music. Sing or just sit back and enjoy the performances. Snacks and refreshments are provided.

Angst movie night: The doors open at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday for the movie that’s being shown in council chambers at City hall, 20399 Douglas Cres. This event is in support of B.C. Child and Youth Mental Health Day (May 7). Angst is a virtual reality experience that explores anxiety, its causes, the effects and what can be done about it. Popcorn and snack are provided.

• Talent showcase: The band Her Brothers performs and hosts an afternoon of performing arts from 1 to 4 p.m. on Friday at the Douglas Park Spirit Square. Young people perform but spectators of all ages are welcome. The prize is a $100 Famous Players gift card. Register you act by emailing youth@langleycity.ca.

• Minute to Win It and pizza party: From 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 5 in the Timms Community Centre, take part in the challenge game for prizes or just enjoy some pizza.

• Langley Walk Obstacle Course: The walk begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the George Preston Recreation Centre with registration opening at noon. The youth component features obstacles along the course, including a tire run, sandbag carry, parkour obstacle, and a inflatable boot camp.
