Avant Garde Studio in downtown Aldergrove is opening its doors for its first open studio art show on the Dec. 1-2 weekend.

The studio is located in the historical wooden church building located at 2946 272nd Street in Aldergrove.

“We are excited to be a part of the Aldergrove community and to showcase several brilliant local artists presenting different styles and mediums,” said Doris Brunsch, one of the artists involved in the studio.

“We believe art is an important part of the culture of any community and look forward to showcasing the venue and the talent.”

There will be 10 artists featured in the show and sale, which will continue throughout the month of December.

Lori McPhee has been hosting art classes and workshops at Avant Garde Studio over the past two years and has been providing studio space for the artists who are featured in the upcoming show.

Art is a way of life for McPhee. She feels it engages the intellect, softens the heart and frees the spirit. McPhee obtained her degree in Fine Arts in Montreal, where she was born. She then came to British Columbia and attended Emily Carr Institute in 1991. A full-time artist for the past 25 years, her works have been displayed at galleries, movie sets and show homes. Her original paintings are collected privately and corporately across Canada, the United States, and around the world.

Brunsch, who creates the clay sculptures that will be included in the show, first met McPhee while Brunsch was working in interior design. Brunsch placed McPhee’s contemporary acrylic paintings in several of the projects she was working on over the years and the two have become good friends as Brunsch began exploring her own artistic talents.

“I started creating clay sculptures in 1996 but I’m not as active as some of the other artists.”

Brunsch says the artists in the show met each other in their social networks and are now coming together for their first joint exhibition at Aldergrove’s Avant Garde Studio.

“Several of the artists will be there for the opening weekend of the show to meet the guests who stop by,” said Brunsch.

Among the show’s artists are Belinda McNiece, Stephanie Shearer, Katina Giesbrecht and Linda Detlor, along with McPhee and Brunsch. There will be paintings in oil and acrylic, as well as mixed media, monotype prints and sculptures.

“The show will continue throughout the month of December and will be the first of more shows we aim to bring to Aldergrove. We invite you to join us to see the original art and speak to some of the artists in house.”

The opening dates are Saturday and Sunday, December 1-2, from 12 noon to 5 p.m. each day, at Avant Garde Studio, 2946 272nd Street, Aldergrove.
