D.W. Poppy Secondary is gearing up to host its 35th annual car show on Sunday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The school’s tradition of putting on one of Langley’s first car shows of the season brings many benefits to both the school and to community members, who get to check out more than 700 collector cars on display in the school’s back field.
The show will also have vendors, concession, 50/50 draws, car show T-shirt sales, and more.
This is the school’s biggest fundraiser of the year and benefits the entire school, including the shop and computer education departments, athletic teams, dry grad and team travel.
Last year, the car show raised approximately $30,000 for the school with the support of more than 500 cars and 2,000 spectators, estimated Kerri Winter, event coordinator.
“It really is part of the Poppy culture,” Winter said.
“Every year we have many past D.W. Poppy alumni that return to our event as a participant, spectator, vendor, and/or sponsor.”
The shop and tech departments are able to purchase tools and technology that are used for student projects and around the school.
“We have now expanded our area on the grassy field to allow us to accommodate more vehicle registrants,”
This year the wish list includes a tire mounting machine, a new counter top in the metalwork room, air fryers in the foods rooms, and replacement shelves in the library.
Students help out on the day of the show at the concession, the gates, on the grounds and during setup and clean up.
The Fort Langley Lions Club will be offering a pancake breakfast in the morning to exhibitors and spectators.
Pre-registration for cars is open until 350 spots are sold at $15. After then, and on the day of, regular registration costs $20 per vehicle.
“Every year we see an increase in vehicle registrants,” Winter commented.
