Clean up, clean up, everybody do their share; clean up, clean up, everybody everywhere!

It’s that time of year where community members in Langley come together to clean up littered cans, bottles, wrappers, dog poo bags, and other types of garbage found along streets and trails to keep Langley Township litter-free.

This year there are 10 registered community events that people can choose from to join on Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

One event is hosted by Bertrand Creek Enhancement Society in partnership with the Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS) in Aldergrove.

This clean up event starts at 10 a.m. at the corner of 265a Street and Fraser Highway.

The clean up path will following the park on Fraser Highway and up to Vanetta Park, where Bertrand Creek crosses 32nd Avenue, explained Lisa Dreves, stewardship programs coordinator with LEPS.

She’s hoping for around 15 people to join the event, and said supplies will be provided by the Township and LEPS, such as bags, pickers, and gloves.

“Folks can bring their own too. We find smaller kids do really well with kitchen tongs,” she suggested, noting a cheap pair will do since the tongs will be used for garbage pick up.

Dreves said cleaning up the community is important because garbage can harm wildlife, pets, and people.

“There are medicines that aren’t disposed of properly, there are sharp edges on broken glass and rusting metal, plants can be damaged and smothered, toxins can be released into groundwater,” Dreves said.

She added that plastic in particular is a large issue, because wildlife eats it or get stuck in it.

“Garbage dumped in Aldergrove and other communities impacts those communities downstream, all the way to the ocean,” she noted.
