Dozens of more items are expected to be kept out of Langley landfills next year thanks to a $10,000 grant handed down to the Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS).

This grant from Vancity is part of more than $1 million given out from the enviroFund Program to a variety of B.C. environmental groups.

LEPS executive director Nichole Marples said the group was thrilled to receive the grant as it will help pay for additional Repair Cafe events in 2024.

“Repair Cafes not only reduce waste in landfills but also build a healthy sense of community,” said Marples.

“The events we’ve held so far have been an overwhelming success. This is a new focus for LEPS, and it has helped to expand our reach, bringing in new volunteers and making more people aware of the work we do.”

After two Repair Cafe events this year, LEPS volunteers were able to repair a total of 64 items, which included bikes, clothing, machinery, and small appliances.

“By repairing, our community saves money and resources, reduces CO2 emissions, and even has fun along the way,” said Marples.

She said LEPS is always looking for more volunteers of all ages for their Repair Cafes, with interested individuals being directed to visit the group’s website at www.leps.bc.ca/action/volunteer.
