Langley Township residents will get priority for swimming lessons in the future, Mayor Eric Woodward is promising.
“Council has now started the process to create priority registration access to swimming lessons for Township of Langley residents and families,” Woodward said in an online message posted on Thursday, March 28.
A new system should be in place by September, or early next year at the latest, Woodward said.
“Currently, about 25 percent of our community’s swimming lessons are filled by registrants that don’t live in the Township of Langley,” Woodward estimated.
“As so many parents know firsthand, there is significant demand for swimming lessons, especially at the beginner levels.”
Woodward said Langley would be “one of many municipalities” to give residents priority in booking lessons.
“Given that the annual operating cost for pools can be pretty high, those that pay for them in their property taxes and rent should obviously have the first chance to use them.”
In response to one questioner, Woodward said the Township is also looking at charging non-residents more to use pools.
“That is underway as well, to confirm a potential non-resident adjustment and priority access well,” Woodward said.
“It’s a little more complicated with drop-ins there versus other facilities, but it’s finally being reviewed seriously.”
He also noted there are plans to build a new pool, at Yorkson Community Park next to the Langley Tennis Centre.
