Music, dance, art celebrates culture in Aldergrove for 2nd year

Various events at Aldergrove Kinsmen Community Centre hosted by Langley Arts Council

Langley Arts Council will be presenting a wide range of performers at the second annual “Celebration of Culture” event throughout March at the Aldergrove Kinsmen Community Centre.

Each Saturday in March will feature a variety of cultural performances.

The events aim to celebrate diversity through hands-on cultural programming, said fundraising coordinator Deepika Pandian.

“It will provide space for education, connection, and the celebration of our cultural differences through music, dance, performance, workshops, and more,” she added.

Saturday, March 2, kicks off the month-long celebration with a free traditional Chinese dance performance by students from Lorita Leung Dance Academy from noon to 1 p.m.

Afterwards, a workshop to make corn husk dolls is being held from 1:30 to 2:30, or 3 to 4 p.m., for $5 per person.

The following Saturday, March 9, will feature the popular Wild Moccasin Dancers from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. for free.

In the afternoon, an Indian Kuthu dance workshop will be held for free until 1 p.m.

Kuthu dance is a lively and energetic form of dance originating from India, predominantly in the southern region. It’s characterized by its face-paced footwork, rhythmic hand gestures, and upbeat movements.

There will also be a free swing-dance workshop from 1 to 2:30 p.m. by the Rock Step Swing Dance Society.

On March 16th, the day will start with a free presentation by Ted Lightfoot about saving wetland and salmon habitats from 11 a.m. to noon.

An Indigenous beading workshop will follow from 1:30 to 2:30, or 3 to 4 p.m. The workshop is free and supplies are provided.

The fourth Saturday, March 23, will feature a free Latin dance performance by the Grupoamerica team from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

It will be followed by a free Mehandi workshop (Henna art) from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

The same Mehandi workshop concludes the month of cultural celebration on March 30, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Some events require registration in advance, which can be done online at langleyarts.ca.

All events will be at the main hall of the Aldergrove Kinsmen Community Centre located at 26770 29th Ave.
