VIDEO: CARES hosts special cat Adopt-A-Thon in Langley

Cheri Hamilton came from New Westminster to adopt a new kitty at Langley’s Canadian Animal Rescue & Extended Shelter (CARES) cat Adopt-A-Thon on Saturday, Aug. 26.

She initially intended for an older cat to keep her current female Siamese cat company, but when she arrived at PetSmart for the Adopt-A-Thon she fell in love with the two Siamese kittens available.

“I didn’t know they even existed, but when I saw the two of them together, I thought they would be perfect for my lonely Siamese at home,” Hamilton told the Langley Advance Times. “They can take care of each other.”

The twin female kittens were full of energy in their shared crate, play fighting and climbing the walls as other potential adopters watched on.

“Another reason is they get a lot of attention here, which is fine, but there are other cats that are getting overlooked as well. I would like to see the other cats get adopted as well,” Hamilton said.

She said she likes both cats and dogs equally.

“Mammals are always welcoming and I think they add a lot to a person’s life, to be honest,” Hamilton added.

After signing some paperwork, Hamilton carefully placed the kittens into a carrier to take them home.

“I hope they entertain my current cat, I know they will entertain me,” she laughed. “But that I can just give them a long a healthy life.”

In the first hour of the Adopt-A-Thon, four adoptions had been processed and many cats found new homes.

Donna Healey-Ogden, volunteer at CARES, said it will help alleviate the overload of cats the shelter is experiencing.

“We’ve been getting pregnant cats… and kittens that have been abandoned and are starving. What are we going to do? Leave them because we are full? No,” she said.

The shelter is planning another adoption event in September, October, and November to help find the kitties a furever home.

Cats available for adoption are listed on CARES website at carescatshelter.com.

Anyone interested in adopting a cat can email the shelter at info@carescatshelter.com.

Its also holding the 20th Walk for the Cats event on Sunday, Sept. 17 at Derby Reach Regional Park.
