The first Saturday in December is Santa’s day in Langley!
The annual Magic of Christmas event returns Saturday, Dec. 7 for a full day of fun for the whole family.
“What’s magical is the kids and the spirit of the season,” says Councillor Paul Albrecht, co-chair of the Parade Committee.
With a joyful mix of treasured traditions and exciting new events, there’s something for everyone. And almost everything is free.
“We’re a small city in a confined area and we have a lot of young families that are living in condos and apartments. Affordable events like this help build community and bring people together.”
Find out which festivities are right for you, or turn yourself into a Christmas elf and make a day of it!
1. Breakfast with Santa
Register here to reserve a seat at this holiday breakfast that can’t be beat. Fill up on pancakes from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and take part in crafts, face painting and other entertainment!
“The small fee is not so much about recovering costs, but about making a commitment. Once we know what kind of numbers to expect we can make sure we have enough for everyone,” says Albrecht.
Santa and Mrs. Claus were the first to RSVP, and they’re looking forward to taking photos with everyone who’s been naughty and nice.
2. Pre-parade Entertainment and Crafts
From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Langley city staff and other partners are hosting free entertainment at three plazas along the parade route.
Bring the whole family to Innes Plaza, McBurney Plaza and St. Andrews Plaza for Christmas crafts and festive music to catch the spirit of the season. Grab yourself a candy cane and join in the fun.
“Rain or shine,” says Albrecht, “We’re just trying to provide opportunities for our community to gather.”
3. Santa Claus Parade
Find your favourite spot along the Fraser Highway from 204 to 207 Street and take in over 50 festive floats, bands, decorated vehicles, carolers, dance troupes, and community groups.
“We’re always hopeful that the weather’s cooperative but we do it rain or shine. I’ve had some parades where it was just pouring rain but the spirit is so alive,” says Albrecht, “It’s heartwarming to see how the community comes together.”
4. Tree Lighting and Caroling
Once the parade is complete, come gather in McBurney Plaza for singing and hot chocolate. Countdown to the lighting of the Langley City Christmas tree with the Mayor and Council, then sing along with the chorus to some of your favourite carols.
