When Langley’s Stephen Tomes reflects on the charities and organizations he chooses to support through his businesses, it comes from a deeply personal place.

As a cancer survivor in his youth, supporting the B.C.’s Cops for Cancer was a natural, says the licensed contractor and owner of Kingsmere Construction and New Trendz Flooring and More, which features flooring, cabinets, countertops and other renovation essentials.

And as a newcomer to Canada, recently arrived in Nova Scotia from the United Kingdom, Lighthouse Ministries helped him get on his feet and get established in his new home; in return, today Tomes pays their monthly mortgage that lets them continue helping widows and orphans without a place to live, and providing supports for at-risk youth.

He’s delighted to continue hearing stories from people they’ve helped, many now here on the West Coast, like himself.

“I lived there for many years and they helped me a lot when I was just getting going – I just wanted to pay that back,” Tomes says.

The Lighthouse Ministry team helped Stephen Tomes get on his feet when he first arrived in Canada from the UK; today the owner of Langley’s New Trendz Flooring and More says thank you by helping them continue aiding widows and orphans, and at-risk youth.

Here at home, he also pays the tuition for two daughters of a Fraser Valley widow, so they can continue to stay in their preferred school.

“We do have a Christian faith, so it’s important to us that a portion of our profits go toward helping people in need,” Tomes explains. “We do as much as we can.”

And, having served alongside the U.K. and Canadian armed forces, he also provides in-store discounts to military members, veterans and emergency services personnel.

But for Tomes, giving back isn’t only a matter of financial contributions, it’s also about giving his time and sharing the expertise gained over his years in business and the construction industry.

In addition to serving as a director of the Lower Mainland Better Business Bureau, he volunteers with the Home Inspection Association of BC and works with the province on the BC Step Code, which supports energy-efficient building practices.

Like the financial supports, it’s all part of building community.
