Marnie Wilson, a special education assistant and mother of two has announced she will run for a seat on the Langley board of education this October.

Having worked in the Langley School District for over 10 years, Wilson said she has firsthand knowledge of the inner workings of the district and would be able to help create an environment of support for students and staff.

“Our family has been through kindergarten to Grade 12 and I feel it is important to have seen the district through both the lens of an employee and that of a parent, Wilson wrote in her announcement.

She served as an executive officer of CUPE 1260, the union representing support staff in the Langley School District, for the past seven years, including three years as president.

Wilson’s experience also includes working with several committees including the Inclusive Education Committee and the Human Dignity Coalition which helps foster inclusion in schools and community.

“Inclusion must be meaningful and intentional in order for every student to reach their full learning potential,” said Wilson.

During her time as president of CUPE 1260, Wilson said, she helped contribute to Indigenous goals of the enhancement agreement as well as advocating for the Aboriginal support workers in the journey towards reconciliation.

“Each of these roles and responsibilities have taught me the importance of collaboration, transparency and consultation.

“I am committed to continuing to listen to what the needs are and looking for progressive solutions that don’t just fix an immediate problem but promote future opportunities,” said Wilson.

“I have heard from students, parents, and staff regarding a range of issues such as safety in schools, public engagement and a need for additional resources.”
