Conservative candidates promised that if re-elected their party will provide up to $700 million for a light rail link from Surrey to Langley City.
The planned light rail line, from King George SkyTrain Station down Fraser Highway to Langley, was part of the plans proposed by TransLink’s Mayors Council.
That plan has been up in the air since the failure of a referendum on raising the PST to pay for the line and other transit upgrades.
MP James Moore and former Surrey mayor and current Conservative candidate Diane Watts made the pledge on Monday morning.
A formal application would have to be made. Surrey’s current mayor Linda Heppner has said the city will go ahead with the project regardless of the failure of the referendum.
The commitment is for up to one third of the cost of the Surrey light rail system. The two lines would run 28 kilometres.
