Langley Township council scrapped the Brookswood/Fernridge Official Community Plan, while giving the go ahead to the Coulter Berry building in Fort Langely.
At Monday night's council meeting, held in the Christian Life Assembly Church to provide more room for the hundreds of attendees, there were just two items up for a vote.
The council first considered the Brookswood OCP, which saw opposition at a three-day public hearing earlier in March.
From the start, it was clear that the council would not approve the OCP as it was. The plan called for greater density and increasing Brookswood's population from 13,500 to 42,000 over 30 years.
A proposal by Councillor Charlie Fox to make major amendments to the plan, including reducing density, was defeated in a close five-to-four vote. Council then voted seven-to-two to defeat the overall OCP.
Several councillors spoke in favour of launching a new process to create a new official community plan with more public input.
The Coulter-Berry building was approved seven-to-two. The building's design has been slightly modified, and reduced in height by three feet since the recent three-night public hearing on the matter. Several councillors mentioned the relatively close numbers in support and opposed to the project, and how it has divided much of Fort Langley.
