Should Langley go to a middle school model across the district?
It’s a question the district leadership team is exploring and they are hoping to get public feedback on the idea at a community information night.
The forum will take place Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Coast Hotel convention centre from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Currently, the district has three middle schools in place with a fourth facility (R.E. Mountain Secondary) scheduled to be converted upon completion of the new high school in Willoughby.
The middle school model aligns with the new curriculum both in terms of personal and social responsibility and exploration.
As part of the evening, Dr. Kimberly Schonert-Reichl, a professor at UBC in the human development, will make a presentation on the social, emotional and physical development of children in their middle years.
Acting superintendent of schools Gord Stewart said this information session does not mean the change is a fait accompli.
Changing the district to a middle school model would require a lot of consultation with each individual school community before going forward with any decisions.
Anyone who is interested in attending the middle school session on Oct. 5, is asked to RSVP to cpereira@sd35.bc.ca or phone 604-534-7891, local 221.
