Election sign restrictions proposed

The roundabout at Five Corners in Murrayville is currently plastered with federal election signs. Langley Township is proposing a bylaw that would restrict election signs in roundabouts and medians, but only during municipal elections.

An amendment to Langley Township’s Highways and Traffic Control Bylaw will make signs on medians and roundabouts illegal during municipal election campaigns.

However, placing election signs at these public locations remains legal for provincial and federal campaigns.

“I have been waiting for years to do this,” commented Councillor Mel Kositsky, when council tentatively approved the change on March 28.

Final adoption of the bylaw is expected later this spring.

“It’s an eyesore. It’s a hazard,” Kositsky said. “It’s absolutely crazy.”

Other councillors saw it differently.

“I think this is overwhelmingly restrictive,” Councillor Kim Richter said.

“I think it’s going to handicap candidates. It’s unfair and it’s undemocratic.”

The bylaw amendment does not impact provincial and federal campaigns because these come under the jurisdiction of the election acts of those senior governments.
