It was a real barn burner — one that had many motorists on the freeway wondering what all the black smoke was about on Sunday afternoon.
Around 2:45 p.m., Township fire crews were called to an acreage in the 8300 block of 216 Street for a barn that had caught fire.
According to assistant fire chief Bruce Ferguson, there was a huge column of black smoke rising from the barn when they arrived.
The barn was empty at the time but the building was destroyed by the blaze, he said.
It had no value. Firefighters protected the home with water while dousing the flames on the barn. It's believed a grass fire spread to the barn.
Firefighters had been out to the home earlier for a bonfire complaint. However, the home is slated for demolition.
The property was purchased by the Ministry of Transportation and will be used for construction of the the new 216 interchange and freeway expansion.
There is nothing suspicious about the blaze.
