Police cruisers descended on a downtown Chilliwack parking lot and arrested a man Tuesday morning after a report of a knife-wielding suspect.

About 10 police cars with lights flashing arrived outside Shoppers Drug Mart in Southgate Plaza, with officers responding to the call, and entering the store at about 9:45 a.m.

“One male suspect was arrested with a weapon after being asked to leave the Shoppers on Yale Road and refusing to vacate the property,” said Cpl. Carmen Kiener, spokesperson for Chilliwack RCMP.

No officers or bystanders were injured. A Griffin security guard sustained an injury from the knife, was treated in hospital and released.

Witnesses said a shelf was knocked over in the store during the kerfuffle and there was blood on the floor.

Charges against the suspect are being recommended for consideration by Crown counsel, police say.
