A Langley resident recently lost $5,000 to a fake Canada Revenue collection.
RCMP said the scam works like this: a crook phones a victim and identifies himself as an officer from Canada Revenue and even provides a badge number.
The ‘officer’ tells his victim there is an arrest warrant and only a deposit of $5000 in Bitcoin will prevent arrest.
The Langley RCMP have issued a warning and a reminder that the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) never requests payments to be made with prepaid credit cards or by Bitcoin, nor do they threaten arrest of taxpayers over the phone or ask for personal information of any kind by email or text message.
