It’s going to be a harsh lesson for students who were relying on summer school to make the grade.
The Langley School District has cancelled programs because of the labour dispute between teachers and the provincial government.
On Wednesday afternoon, the district posted a notice online.
“To mitigate the impact of no summer classes, administrators are beginning to consider options and other learning opportunities for students in the fall. The District is committed to meeting the needs of students and will work closely with families and students to ensure success and graduation,†superintendent Suzanne Hoffman said in a district statement.
The Labour Relations Board ruled on Friday, June 27, that summer school programs are essential only for students in Grades 10, 11, and 12 who failed a course during the 2013-2014 year and who will not have the opportunity to make up the course.
Those students may be able to take courses through the Langley Education Centre and its structured or self-paced programs. The district suggests people check out www.lecss.com to learn about the courses.
Most of the students in Langley summer school were not taking remedial courses but enhancement/enrichment courses.
“While the cancellation of Summer Session may cause concern for some students’ graduation plans, every effort will be made by secondary schools to accommodate these students in the fall to minimize that impact,†she said.
