Langley Township's population grew almost twice as fast as the population of the Lower Mainland in the last five years, according to 2016 census numbers released Wednesday.

The Township's population at the time of the census was 117,285, up from 104,177 in 2011.

That's a growth rate of 12.6 per cent, compared to 6.6 per cent in the Lower Mainland.

Regionally, only Whistler (20.7 per cent growth to 11,854) and Squamish (13.7 per cent to 19,512) grew faster than the Township.

Langley City, meanwhile, remained largely static. It's population in 2016 of 25,888 was just a 3.2 per cent increase from 25,081, for just a little more than 800 new residents.

Among Langley's neighbours, Surrey was the fastest growing, and added more people, with 517,887 recorded for 2016 for a 10.6 per cent increase. Abbotsford grew by 5.9 per cent, to 141,397. Maple Ridge grew by 8.2 per cent to 82,256.

Vancouver, at 631,486 residents, grew by 4.6 per cent.

Langley Township's rapid growth is coming largely from the Willoughby area, which has seen a decade-long construction boom, and the addition of many townhouses and an increasing number of four-, five-, and six-storey condo projects.
