A man who grabbed an officer’s stun gun during an arrest in Abbotsford in March has been sentenced to 30 days in jail.
Raul Hernandez, 35, previously pleaded guilty to charges of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and disarming a peace officer.
He was also initially charged with robbery, but pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of theft under $5,000.
A fourth charge of resisting a peace officer was stayed at sentencing May 16 in Abbotsford provincial court.
Hernandez also received one year of probation.
The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) reported on March 28 that they had been called on March 25 to an auto parts store in the 33400 block of South Fraser Way.

Staff told police that a man was attempting to steal items and pulled out a knife when they approached him.
Officers arrived as the suspect was leaving the store, but he failed to follow directions to show his hands.
The APD said a stun gun was then used, but the man still refused to comply, resulting in a brief struggle with police. The man grabbed hold of an officer’s stun gun, attempting to disarm the officer.
More police arrived on scene and were able to arrest the man, who was soon identified as Hernandez.
Court records do not indicate whether Hernandez was released on bail prior to sentencing.
According to the provincial court database, he has prior convictions for resisting a peace officer, mischief and driving while prohibited.
