A Langley resident for the past 35 years, Dorothy McKim has grown distressed as she watched the current Township council become “more and more dysfunctional.”
She is running for councillor as part of the Vote Langley Now group.
“This has been a wonderful community to raise my family and I have watched with great interest the growth of what was once a small community grow into a community of considerable size with many amenities that makes family living enjoyable,” McKim said.
But she has grown concerned that taxpayers are not getting a fair deal.
“Constant dissension on council hampers the forward movement of any enterprise, whether it is private or municipal government,” she said. “I see the current council mired in negative rhetoric which is wasting precious time and money.”
It is time citizens step up to help make the changes that that are “desperately” needed.
“Let’s return sane government to our citizens and give them what they pay for,” she said. “All citizens have the right to be able to trust their community representatives to make fair decisions remaining mindful of the needs of all.”
After moving to Langley in 1974, McKim volunteered extensively in the community while her children were younger, serving as a Big Sister for many years and serving as president of the Big Sisters organization in Langley in 1977 and 1978.
She was Langley Family Services’ group facilitator for parenting classes, and was coach and registrar with Little League baseball.
In 1988 she joined Langley Riders Society, and rode on the Drill Team for many years and then continued to coach for a number of years and is now an honourary life member.
She joined Navy League of Canada, Fraser Valley branch, serving as president in 1991 and 1992. In 1993, McKim joined Langley Hospice Society board, and was president for three years
In 2000, McKim was inducted as a member of Rotary Club of Langley Central, eventually serving as assistant secretary, secretary, and membership director for two years, and director of service projects. She currently holds the positions of vice-president and public relations director. McKim is a two-time Paul Harris Fellow, the highest award attainable from Rotary, in recognition of her service to the community.
McKim has worked in the non-profit sector since 1981; in 2005 she joined Ishtar Transition Housing Society as executive director.
She is affiliated with the B.C. Society of Transition Houses, the B.C. Housing Registry Council, and the Community Social Service Employers Association. McKim also sits on the Regional Child and Youth Council, and is a member of the Integrated Case Management Committee, Homelessness Steering Committee and the High Risk Domestic Violence Team.
She ran for Township council in 1999, with Langley Citizens Coalition.
