More rain barrels offered in LEPS sale

Rainwater harvesters can still get barrels through LEPS, even if they missed the initial sale

More rain barrels have been secured by Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS), and the sale is on again.

LEPS convinced their rain barrel supplier to provide 33 barrels beyond those purchased in the online sale that closed on March 31, so the EnviroWorld sale site has been re-opened.

Any barrels left unsold by the April 13 Rain Barrel Distribution Event at the Township of Langley Operations Centre, 4700- 224 St., will be available there, first come, first served.

The Distribution Event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. LEPS will also offer a Water Wise Gardening workshop, information about drought tolerant garden plants, water conservation information exhibits, and fun water-related activities for kids and adults.

Lawn and garden watering makes up nearly 40 per cent of domestic water usage during peak summer months, said LEPS executiove director Nichole Marples. Rain barrels save most homeowners about 1,300 gallons of water each summer, reducing the demand for treated drinking water.

Homeowners connect the barrel to their downspout, and use the rain barrel to collect and store rainwater to be used at a later time. The water harvested is fresh and can be used for a wide variety of purposes, including watering the lawn and plants, washing vehicles, and even topping off pools.

By harvesting rainwater, residents can lower their water bill (if metred), conserve their well water (if on private well), use water on their own schedules, improve their soil’s pH balance, reduce erosion, flooding and storm water run-off and help protect rivers, streams, lakes and the environment, explained Marples.
