City of Langley dog lovers and gardening enthusiasts alike have reason to celebrate.
Langley City council has approved the addition of a new dog off-leash park and community garden at Linwood Park. Starting early in the New Year, construction is scheduled to be completed in May – just in time for late spring planting and warm weather walks with good ol’ Rover.
The community garden will be double the size of the existing garden site at Nicomekl Elementary, offering approximately 28 plots (depending on sizes).
The off-leash park, which will be developed in conjunction with the community garden to minimize costs, will feature benches, a walking trail and a drinking water and wash-off area for pets.
“These projects . . . promote healthy lifestyles and healthy community initiatives,” said Rick Bomhof, the City’s director of engineering, parks and environment.
Request for Proposals from not-for-profit groups will be issued for the operation and maintenance of the new community garden site.
Centrally located, Linwood Park is about 3.5 acres in size and is bordered by Michaud Crescent and 55A Avenue, between 201 Street and 201A Street. The site offers existing parking and infrastructure, including water service, washroom facilities, a sports field and a playground.
Feedback from an open house held on Sept. 18 and a three-week online survey indicated that Linwood Park was the most popular location choice for both the off-leash area and community garden. Of the 130 completed surveys, 62 respondents indicated Linwood Park as their preferred site location.
Application and cost information for garden plots will be available once the City selects the successful not-for-profit group in charge of the administration of the gardens. For more information call 604-514-2997.
