A Surrey-based police watchdog is looking for witnesses to an Oct. 26 arrest in Newton during which a man in his early 30s was seriously injured.
The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia is a civilian oversight agency tasked with investigating all police-related incidents resulting in serious harm or death, “whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.”
A press release issued by the IIO on Nov. 23 states the man “had an interaction with members of the Surrey Police Service who were using an RCMP vehicle,” after he left the Circle K convenience store at the intersection of 138 Street and 72 Avenue at about 5:10 p.m.
He was arrested in the parking lot in front of the building.
The IIO was notified on Nov. 1, 2023 and is asking anyone who was near the store between 4:45 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. that day and witnessed the arrest, “or the interaction leading up to it,” to contact the IIO on its Witness Line, toll-free, at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
