Nominations for the 10th annual Langley Environmental Hero awards are now open.
Langley residents are invited to submit their nominations before the May 13 deadline.
The three categories include: youth, individual, and group or business.
Winners will be acknowledged with a plaque and a heritage apple tree to be planted in their honour at the Fort Langley National Historic Site on Saturday, June 11.
“This year is a milestone for the Langley Environmental Hero Awards,” said Langley-Aldergrove MP Mark Warawa, a founding member of the 2016 Langley Environmental Hero Nominations Committee.
Since its inception, well over 100 Langley residents or organizations have been nominated and recognized for their contributions, Warawa said.
This year’s nominations committee has been expanded to include more community leaders.
The new members include Cloverdale-Langley City MP John Aldag and the City of Langley.
Members of the committee who have been involved with the awards in previous years and continue to lend their support are the Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS), Fort Langley National Historic Site, the Langley Times, TD Canada Trust Branch Manager Gary Aulakh (Willowbrook branch).
Nichole Marples, Executive Director of the Langley Environmental Partners Society, said Langley “is so fortunate to have such an active citizenry contributing their time to make our community a better place, through efforts big and small, for the benefit of our environment.”
“TD is committed to being an environmental leader by reducing its operational impact and being a sustainable and responsible business as we grow,” said TD Branch Manager Gary Aulakh.
“The Times is proud to once again be a partner in this initiative, which makes such a positive difference for the environment,” said publisher, Jean Hincks.
Citizens recognized by the awards “make a difference in our community by protecting the environment we all share,” said Township of Langley mayor Jack Froese.
City of Langley Mayor Ted Schaffer said the City “continually works with environmental leaders in our local community, and looks forward to celebrating key individuals and businesses who have made a positive difference through grass roots efforts, both big and small, to protect the environment.”
Cloverdale-Langley City MP, John Aldag said ensuring the health of our environment “has played an important role in my life for many years.
“I am excited to be part of this year’s award process and look forward to learning more about the work of people and businesses in Langley who are also stewards of our environment,” Aldag added.
