Jessica Hewitt has helped Canada win the silver medal in the 3,000m short track speed skating event at the Olympic Games in Sochi.

Hewitt and her Canadian relay team actually crossed the finish line in third place in Tuesday's race but were bumped up a spot on the podium after the Chinese team was disqualified.

The Canadian team consists of Marie-Eve Drolet, Hewitt, Valerie Matltais and Marianne St-Gelais.

Canada finished in a time of 4:10.641 while South Korea crossed the finish line in 4:09.498.

Italy wound up with the bronze medal.

The 27-year-old Hewitt was born in Langley but grew up in Kamloops after moving to the Interior when she was seven years old.

It was in Kamloops she took up speed skating and this is her first Olympic experience.

She also skated in the 500m short track event in Sochi last week, advancing to the quarter-final, but a crash in that race cost her a chance to move on.

Both Hewitt's parents, Gary and Shelley, her mom's boyfriend, Hewitt's boyfriend and his sister were scheduled to be in Sochi cheering her on.
