Not long after warning local residents about keeping their garage door openers secure, the Langley RCMP recovered several from a suspected thief.
On June 30, Mounties headed to a Willoughby condo complex just before 4 a.m. for a report of a woman going through mailboxes and parked cars, said Cpl. Holly Largy, spokesperson for the Langley RCMP.
Officers found a woman riding a mountain bike and matching the description of the thief. She was caught after a brief chase, said Largy.
After being arrested for theft from a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property, a search also turned up white powder thought to be cocaine, a GPS device, a bank book, mail, a flashlight, a glass breaking tool, and several garage door openers.
Police have warned that thieves are using garage door openers taken from parked cars to get into garages and houses.
The 33-year-old Surrey woman has been released from custody and is due back in Surrey Provincial Court on Sept. 22.
“While this arrest is considered a small victory in the battle against the recent property crime spree, it should not be taken as an opportunity to lessen our security efforts,” said Largy.
She reminded people to remain vigilant, report suspicious people, and remove belongings from parked cars.
