A 26-year-old Saskatoon man is facing charges of impaired driving after a white Honda Civic ran a stop sign in the Yorkson neighbourhood on Wednesday evening and struck a police cruiser. The officer was not badly injured, but there was some damage to the front of his vehicle.

Alcohol is believed to have played a role when a driver ran a stop sign and crashed into a Langley police cruiser in a Yorkson neighbourhood on Wednesday night.

Around 5:45 p.m., a Langley RCMP officer was making routine patrols in a marked cruiser when it was hit by a white Honda Civic whose driver failed to stop at 208 Street and 76 Avenue.

The officer suffered minor injuries and his vehicle sustained damage to its front end.

The suspect vehicle came to a stop several metres away on the front lawn of a home.

The officer managed to check on the driver, a 26-year-old Saskatoon man. The officer suspected the man was impaired so he was taken into custody and brought to the Langley detachment to provide a breath sample, said Langley RCMP Sgt. Alexandra Mulvihill.

“Charges are being forwarded to Crown for impaired driving,” said Mulvihill.

Several liquor bottles were taken out of the vehicle as police searched it. Both the Honda and the police cruiser were towed away.

Traffic was heavily backed up while RCMP investigated.
