A parkade collapsed Monday afternoon (March 17) at a construction project in Langley Township, while three workers were standing on top.
Construction crews were pouring a concrete slab for the parkade at a new condomonium complex on 66 Avenue near 203 Street around 3 p.m. when the supporting formwork gave way, WorkSafe B.C. reported.
The safety agency said one worker managed to hang on to some concrete reinforcing rods, while the other two rode the collapsing slab as it sagged more than 10 feet.
All three men managed to escape without injury, WorkSafe B.C. spokesperson Ally Skinner-Reynolds told The Times.
“It was a miracle that no one was hurt,” Skinner-Reynolds said, “because we’ve seen people die [in similar accidents].”
A WorkSafe engineer was to be on site Tuesday to investigate the cause of the collapse and to determine when work could safely resume.
